Historian/Architectural Historian for Iowa-Based Fieldwork

Tallgrass Archaeology LLC, a full-service cultural resources consulting firm located in Iowa City, Iowa, is accepting applications for a Historian/Architectural Historian.   

 

The position will require historical research and writing in support of both historical/architectural and archaeological surveys. It will also require conducting surveys and evaluations of both individual resources and groups of resources in compliance with the standards set forth by the Secretary of Interior and the State Historic Preservation Office of Iowa. Responsibilities will include conducting field surveys, research, writing, evaluation of historic resources, and related tasks. This position will work as part of a close-knit team of historians and archaeologists but will also be required to work independently on some projects. The Historian/Architectural Historian will work under the direction of the Principal Investigators. At times, he or she will be required to serve as lead author or Principal Investigator. 

 

The Historian/Architectural Historian will demonstrate proficiency in conducting such research, compiling site inventory forms, evaluating resources for National Register of Historic Places eligibility, and summarizing their findings in technical reports. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs and the basic understanding of common GIS applications are also required. The ability to work independently or as part of a team, when needed, is a plus. 

 

This is a remote position that requires the employee to be in Iowa or a surrounding state with availability to travel within the state of Iowa. Occasional single and multi-day travel will be required to conduct fieldwork or research assignments, individually or as part of a team. All travel is expected to be within the state of Iowa. All applicants should possess a valid driver’s license and may be required to drive themselves to and from work-related activities. 

 

Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in History, Public History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related field and no fewer than two years of cumulative experience in cultural resource management or a related profession. The chosen applicant will meet or exceed the Secretary of Interior’s qualifications for this position. 

 

This is a full-time position with compensation ranging from $25 to $29 per hour, commensurate with experience. Benefits include full health insurance paid for by the employer and paid time off (PTO). Travel and lodging expenses are covered as appropriate.
